Columbus Crew Clinches Playoff Spot Despite Chicago Loss

The Columbus Crew has secured a spot in the 2025 MLS Cup playoffs, marking their third consecutive postseason appearance, despite suffering a setback in their latest match against the Chicago Fire. The Crew fell 2-0 at Soldier Field on September 27, unable to find the back of the net as they faced a well-organized Chicago defense.

In a match that could have further solidified their position in the standings, Columbus struggled offensively, missing several key players due to injury, including striker Wessam Abou Ali and forward Diego Rossi. Veteran goalkeeper Evan Bush started in place of Patrick Schulte, but the Crew's attack couldn't muster a response against a Chicago team that was determined to capitalize on their home advantage.

Chicago’s Andrew Gutman opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a stunning long-range strike that deflected off the crossbar into the goal, setting the tone for the match. The Fire doubled their lead in the 70th minute through a goal from Nicolás Cuypers, further frustrating the Crew's efforts to mount a comeback.

Despite the defeat, Columbus was buoyed by results elsewhere, clinching their playoff berth as the New York Red Bulls lost to New York City FC. Coach Wilfried Nancy emphasized the need to keep moving forward, indicating that the Crew must build on their playoff experience to make a deeper run this year.

As the Crew prepares for the playoffs, the focus will be on overcoming injuries and regaining momentum. The team continues to be a formidable presence in the Eastern Conference and will aim to replicate their 2023 success when they won the MLS Cup. With the postseason on the horizon, Columbus will need to harness the energy of their squad and find innovative ways to adapt, particularly in the absence of key attackers.
