Devils Stumble in Season Opener Against Surging Hurricanes

Rough Start for New Jersey

The New Jersey Devils opened their 2025-26 NHL season with a 6-3 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on the road. Despite tying the game three times, the Devils were ultimately unable to contain Carolina's offensive onslaught, led by goals from K'Andre Miller, Seth Jarvis, and Taylor Hall.

New Jersey's young star defenseman Luke Hughes had a mixed debut, showing flashes of offensive creativity but also struggling with discipline, taking a key slashing penalty in the third period. Goaltender Jacob Markstrom made 27 saves in the losing effort.

Hurricanes Dominate at Home

The Hurricanes came out strong on home ice, outshooting the Devils 33-30 and controlling the pace of play for much of the game. Veteran forward Taylor Hall had a goal and an assist against his former team, while Sebastian Aho and Shayne Gostisbehere each added two assists.

Offseason acquisition Nikolaj Ehlers made his Hurricanes debut, recording two shots in 19:35 of ice time. Goalie Frederik Andersen turned in a solid performance, stopping 27 of 30 shots to earn the victory.
