New Adaptations of Horror Hits Smile and A Quiet Place Coming to Comics
In a major move for horror fans, two popular Paramount film franchises are set to expand into the world of comic books in the new year. IDW Publishing has announced the launch of new Smile and A Quiet Place comic book titles through their IDW Dark imprint.
First up in February is Smile: For the Camera from writer Hannah Rose May and artist Mariana Puglia. This new series will bring the terrifying premise of the recent Smile film to the sequential art medium. Details on the comic's plot are still under wraps, but readers can expect the same unsettling atmosphere and disturbing imagery that made the movie a hit.
Following shortly after in March is A Quiet Place: Storm Warning, which will explore the expanded A Quiet Place universe. The creative team of this new title has not yet been revealed, but fans can likely anticipate a thrilling tale set in the deadly world first introduced on the big screen.
"Smile and A Quiet Place have both struck a chord with audiences through their unique blends of suspense, horror, and emotion," said IDW Editor-in-Chief John Barber. "We're thrilled to be working with the talented teams behind these new comic book projects to expand these captivating franchises in fresh and terrifying ways."
Vertigo's New Lineup Unveiled at NYCC
In addition to the new comic adaptations, this year's New York Comic Con also brought major announcements from DC's Vertigo imprint. Several new titles were revealed that aim to push the boundaries of the publisher's mature-readers line.
Leading the charge is Fanatic, a new series from Lumberjanes co-creator Grace Ellis and artist Hannah Templer. This supernatural thriller follows a young woman who becomes entangled in a dark cult after the mysterious death of her best friend.
Vertigo is also debuting Black Tower from writer Ram V and artist Mike Perkins. Billed as "The Raven Conspiracy," this gothic horror tale blends elements of mystery and the occult as it explores the secrets of an ancient tower.
Rounding out the new Vertigo slate is A Walking Shadow, a psychological suspense story from writer Si Spurrier and artist Aaron Campbell. The series promises to delve deep into the human psyche as it follows a former MI5 agent on a mind-bending journey.
"The new Vertigo lineup represents the cutting edge of comic book storytelling," said DC Publisher Jim Lee. "These are bold, provocative tales that will thrill longtime fans and draw in new readers looking for something truly unique."
